Concussion Management

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a direct impact to the head, neck or body that transmits force to the brain. This can temporarily disrupt normal brain function, leading to a range of physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms.

Concussion symptoms vary from person to person and may appear immediately or develop over the following hours or days. Importantly, you do not need to lose consciousness to experience a concussion. Standard imaging tests, such as MRI, typically do not reveal the functional changes associated with a concussion.

At Woolwich Physiotherapy, our team helps identify the systems affected by your injury and develop an individualized rehabilitation plan. Early assessment and appropriate guidance can help support recovery and a safe, gradual return to everyday activities.

A Comprehensive Approach to Your Recovery

Concussions can affect several interconnected systems in the body. Our physiotherapists assess key areas to better understand your symptoms and develop a treatment plan tailored to your recovery. Your assessment may include:

Balance & Walking

Assessing stability, coordination and walking patterns.

Vestibular Function

Evaluating dizziness, motion sensitivity and the body's balance system.

Eye Movement & Visual Tracking

Examining ocular-motor function and visual coordination.

Exercise Tolerance

Understanding how physical activity influences symptoms and recovery.

Neck & Cervical Spine Function

Assessing neck mobility, muscle tension, strength and joint position awareness to identify contributing factors.

Understanding What Your Body Needs to Recover

Every concussion is different. Identifying which systems have been affected is an important first step in developing a rehabilitation plan tailored to your symptoms, abilities and recovery goals.
