Neurological Physiotherapy

Neurological physiotherapy is a specialized area of physiotherapy that focuses on treatment of individuals with neurological conditions and disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord and nerves. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Cerebral Palsy (CP), Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) and more
Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke rehab begins with a thorough assessment that examines the impairments and restrictions that you are experiencing as a result of your stroke. At Woolwich Physiotherapy, your goals are what drives your treatment plan. Whether it’s being able to walk better, transfer from your wheelchair, use your arm more effectively, or return to a sport, we will work towards achieving your goal(s). Because a stroke affects your brain and neurological system, treatment sessions focus on creating positive neuroplastic changes through very specific and progressive movements and exercise. Neuroplastic changes or neuroplasticity, is your brain’s ability to re-wire its connections and structure after injury. Physiotherapists who are trained in neurological rehab related to a stroke use comprehensive movement analysis to help facilitate neurotypical movement and recovery, and aim to reduce compensatory strategies where possible.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Symptom Management

At Woolwich Physiotherapy, our aim is to help address the symptoms associated with MS. Regardless of which form of MS you have (CIS, relapsing-remitting, primary or secondary progressive), our physiotherapists can help address weakness, balance, spasticity, endurance and reduce the risk of falls. MS can produce a wide range of symptoms, and for that reason, a thorough individualized assessment and treatment plan is important.

Parkinson’s Disease Management

At Woolwich Physiotherapy, we believe the role of physiotherapy for an individual with Parkinson’s Disease is important in managing symptoms and quality of life. Bradykinesia (slowness of movement), rigidity (tightness and stiffness of joints), akinesia (difficulty starting a movement), and tremor (quivering/shaking) are some of the more visible and motor related symptoms of Parkinson’s. Our physiotherapists will help create a treatment plan that is specific to the amount of disease progression and the individual’s impairments and goals. There is evidence that exercise has a positive impact on slowing disease progression and maintaining quality of life. At Woolwich Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists can also help prescribe the appropriate gait aid, educate on falls prevention, and provide transfer training for caregivers (eg. bed to chair, chair to stand etc.).
